Things you'd like to see in maps?

They are indeed, I know some map designers are building the dry river beds ready for the water update, so it can be added at a later date.

Wa--wa--water update?  Have BI actually talked about working on this or are these map designers just wishing upon a star? XD

 

Sooo, I upscaled my texture image from 1024x1024 to 2048x2048 with a "horizontal scale"(as L3DT calls it) of 1 cell, which is suggested for FPS.  Maybe I'm crazy for doing this with my practice map, but the thing is turning into something else lol.  It's alright, I can handle wasting time and disappointments, I've been playing Arma long enough.  But anyways, changing the res for the texture map is fine, but the heightmap, as I assumed, is distorted when loading it into L3DT.  However, I kind of dig the way some things changed so I started working with it again.  I'll post a smaller image of the heightfield map, I'ma leave the texture map out for a while though because it needs some work yet(meaning it looks not quite terrible but almost).

It's alright, my sat map sucks atm too. Need to grab a lot more images from google earth pro, stitch them, and photoshop it some. Half the island I'm using is lighter than the other half on google earth because I guess the satellite must have done half of it at one time and the other a different day.

Yeah google takes multiple sat images and pieces them together, some of them can be a few years old too.  That's what I've been doing too.  Half of my texture looks like crap right now because I didn't even finish with sat images, just kinda painted some parts for now.

whatever my lowest alt is, arma will make that the water level?

no, it's always static 0 for water level in arma. Which means your deepest part of map under water will have to be negative value of your whole map. Then you deduct that value from total height you had in l3dt and that will be your new max.

I need to span a 430 meter crossing that is 50 meters from ground to sea plus the sea is 10 meters deep under it.

Right now anything will do but if you want an idea of bridge porn check out this :o

is that from lakeside, the a3life map? I know they have a couple bridges there but I haven't checked them all out. The one I did travel over was in lakeside and was bugged.

It's from an upcoming map, the guy making the terrain created it but won't share :( I did ask really nicely

Out of all the things people are being stingy about, a bridge? Really. He must be planning on making another life mod and expecting people to refrain from ripping it anyways.

Considering I'm going to need like 50 frickin bridges on mine.. probably going to have to get into modelling myself if people aren't going to share their frickin work. No wonder nothing ever gets done in arma.

Cring0, imagine someone taking your work never giving you any credit and maybe even rebranding it and calling their own. It is true tho, arma community has become extra careful with sharing their work.

Richie, I'd assume if you can provide peace of mind to the creator and assuring (proving) he will be credited, he'd share.

Yeah I understand. Believe me, I am more empathetic toward his stance, it's just that things are getting ridiculous.

If I make my own I'm just going to put my name all over it. It'll look terrible but hey. Maybe I'll even put my PayPal link all over it lol.

Nope, he wants it as an exclusive on his new terrain, can't blame him :) lovely piece of work though, really nice looking bridge

I'm trying to get all the things I need. Currently I found how to reskin certain things. So maybe just a matter of time.

I really wonder what went into making the Altis map.  It sure seems more life-like to me.

 

 

I checked out Chernaraus with Terrain Pack and they do look better than they did in A2 but I personally think Altis is still a step up from them with respect to realism.

 

 

They must of spent a long time designing that map.

 

Not so much the layout of the map.. ie: buildings/towns/road etc.. but the ground and how it has variations on it.  

 

The old maps are just too cartoony and unrealistic to me.. I feel like I'm playing a hybrid of A2 with a new character/gear menu and additional features of being able to put attachments on weapons. 

 

I'd love to see someone make a map with those features or even re-do an A2 map from scratch and not just port it over replacing a tree object of A2 with an object in the Terrain pack of A3.

 

 

I know some of you who are die-hards on the old maps may disagree with me but I would encourage anyone to go on Altis and really observe the details and how the environment was done if you really want to make a GOOD realistic map.
