Desync

Voltan

Question

Hi all,

Just wondering, what would have the biggest effect on server de-sync performance? My players are getting high fps, and the server is getting good fps, but there has been alot of desync, players running off into the distance on my our screens, but not really where they are.

I am using a hosted server, so I am not sure what I should be setting those values to. My basic.cfg is the same as the example.

read the descriptions of each setting, you will get an idea of what to change. any explanation would just be me restating the comments in the wiki post

You're missing the point. I can read the comments in the wiki. That doesn't tell me how to find that information from my hosted server to put in there.

Do you mean the location of the file ? what server host?

gtx use a folder called "DayZConfig" last time i used them.

streamline games use a folder called "PROFILE" or they put it in the root of your server,  last time i used them.

just look for the file called basic.cfg it will be with the hiveExt.ini and your arma2oaserver.rpt

Or do you mean you dont know which of the options to add to your basic.cfg?

Also these threads maybe of some help.

No, didn't mean location. I meant how do I know how many messages that can be sent in one simulation cycle for example for a hosted server..

Those links are much more helpful, thanks!

So for other people, this link is the one I have found most useful and detailed:

This guide is completely false. Do not use it - it only makes your performance worse.

After your warning I looked up a few others and these two are the ones I have gotten most info from:

So, I am at my wits end, I have tried optimising basic.cfg for my server, and while it feels faster at times, my players and I are still getting horrible desync, and the Server CPU according to the panel is constantly sitting between 80 and 120%

I even reduced the amount of WAI missions being run in an attempt to help but it didnt improve the situation. I feel being on the error map Sauerland isnt helping, but there must be something I am missing.

The server hosts are blaming the AI I have installed, but I dont feel like that I have that many running that the server would be hampered as it is.

I think the server was fine with base epoch with no scripts installed, so where do I go next? What scripts are the worst for desync and cpu usage?

I'm starting to think that the only answer is to change to a smaller map with less errors and have less AI

What server host are you using?

@Voltan I've used them in the past and had much the same outcome as you. Even with just 2 WAI missions at a time and no custom map additions I still had a fair bit of desync.

This begs the question, what are the best server hosts for arma 2 dayz out there? What hosts do people here recommend?

I upgraded to one of their dedicated servers. Was much better I could run 3 A2 servers off the same machine with no desync or problems. Unfortunately us Aussies are pretty much screwed, not much on offer, then they charge you an arm and a leg. I was paying 250 a month, other than that no complaints @Voltan

From what I've seen prices in Australia start at around $120 and upwards.
Maybe @salival will know of a few good ones.

I self host on my fibre at home, so i've not got much input. I was with GTXservers on 1.0.5.1 and I disliked them. They were sub par performance wise.

Just go dedicated if you can afford it. It is the best move you could possibly make.

Edit: @salivaldid you ever get results when using a virtual environment? You can get VPSs for pretty cheap prices in some places so that also might be worth looking into @Voltan. I would try NFO servers - I think they have the best virtual machine setup, and it is much cheaper.

I built my dual xeon 2.4ghz machine specifically for 1.0.6, I did not get great results but it was under FreeBSD as a host machine (supported but not really, linux would have been better imo). I ended up switching to an I5 dedicated windows box and the performance was way better.

I would love to know how the big providers are doing VPS's that don't suck, I mean it worked for me, but with 10+ players on server FPS would drop to 15 or so. On the new I5 machine it's around 45FPS with 10+ players on.

I still use the virtual machine(s) for testing my own mods on a blank install, so it's not completely useless

I tried a vm set up on an ovh mc-32.

My orignal plan was to have my servers on a vm and then my father in law wanted a fm on the same box to host his websites with plesk, and we'd share the cost.

Well after a week of trials, I told him I couldn't run on a vm and needed to run on the base machine.

Performance just wasn't good enough, even with the vm using 90% or so of the resources.

We scrapped that idea and I just used the whole box to myself.

Dedicated servers look horrendously expensive. How much bandwidth at a minimum would I need to self host a server?

I am unlimited Gbit fibre at home, we would use between 5-700gb a month anyway (we quite like HD midget porn) and I haven't noticed anything major cap wise since running the server.

I will eventually install SNMP on it to get statistics because I am actually quite curious my self.

Some of us don't have that sort of bandwidth for our HD Midget Porn
