0 MGT
Block ports 80,8080 and 443 on the server firewall, then the squad.xml which is hosted on an external host is blocked. Only problem I can see is some info might not be passed to Gametracker, oh wait........... Flosstradamus

0 hambeast
curious, why would you want to do this? reduce load time for players to download xmls?
0 maca134
I have a hunch that dodgy squad xmls can cause unexpected effects. I have had some weird logs which i suspect are related to xmls.

0 MGT
You get wierd stuff appearing in your rpt log when there's a bad squad.xml either from the host being down or the image being borked (When you press P it says cannot load image) https://www.google.co.uk/#q=squad.xml+causing+server+crash&safe=off
0 Uro
Squad.XML's also cause massive desync on busy servers, which usually result in crashes, amongst other things. As Dave says it can be anything from poor hosting of the XML, a bad image file, or even an error in the XML itself. I can see the point in them for Arma2, they're pretty neat for platoons etc, but they can and do completely break DayZ servers. Edit: Aside from blocking the ports on your firewall you could set the MaxCustomFileSize to zero in the basic.cfg MaxCustomFileSize = 0; Just a thought as some people don't have access to thier firewalls, this may/may not help with the issue. IIRC it's limited to a certain size, I cant recall what that is for the beta server dayz uses... MGT
0 cen
that's for face skins, not squad xmls. MGT
0 Uro
that's for face skins, not squad xmls. And custom sounds according to BIS: MaxCustomFileSize=<size_in_bits>; Users with custom face or custom sound larger than this size are kicked when trying to connect. I've emailed Dwarden at BIS to see if there is any way to disable them short of port blocking.

It is related ham, another way is to block popular xml hosting sites ip addresses rather than the ports.

0 Stranger
Does the port block works for you guys? I did the same now .. our server was fine last 6 days without any crash. Today it started freaking crashing all the time..
0 Stranger
Oh i blocked the Ports you descriped MGT and they are still able to join with xml files. it seems if you let the arma exe file trough the firewall it is not working.
0 maca134
Its not to do with order is it? Like, the rule regarding he EXE is before the rule for port 80, so the connection gets allowed because it matches the first rule before getting to the second rule. 0 Stranger
i dont know if it has somethung todo with the order. FIrst it tells arma to have access, then it should be remove that because i set up port 80 denie after that allow on the exe file.
0 Mochan
How so you block these ports? On gtx? Also can u list me with the ips of the top websites?
0 Stranger
Blocking Ports does not work in any way. Players with broken Squad XML files are still able to join the server. At the moment there are many players with broken squad xml files out there...
0 Stranger
Ok so today, the server crashed again and i checked the logs what causes the crash. There was a Player in the BEC logs: 15:55:00 : Player #24 Lumi (92.105.40.**:1025) connected 15:55:04 : Lost Connection! 15:47:52 : Player #24 Lumi (92.105.40.**:1025) connected 15:47:55 : Lost Connection! So it is a player that causes the crashes. I dont know who it is or why he causes the server to crash...

0 BigZiggyHD
Client side is there something the player can do so it doesn't effect others. For instance we had a few different groups running squad.xmls, no problem some privately hosted others not and the server didn't crash however some players had issues resulting in a not responding and a BEC kick. Removing the image seemed to nullify the issue but just wondering if a reformat on the image would work i.e. instead of using 256 x 256 or 512 x 512 if something smaller would be better or removing transparency in the image, etc... -Ziggy
