Floyd
On a Windows server machine, .bat files and .cmd files are a common way of starting the game. They are written in a GUI interface (notepad, notepad ++ , etc.) Firedaemon is another way to control the game. Also windows services, etc. If you don't have a working knowledge of changing directories, moving, copying files without a GUI, or writing a simple bat or cmd file, then a dedicated (or VDS) is more than likely not for you. I'm am not a server guru by any stretch. I guess perhaps I'm lucky in that I grew up on DOS. A green/amber text screen was all we had for visual input (or output). I guess because most today haven't used DOS is perhaps why programs such as Tophe's Arma Dedicated Server Tool (TADST.exe) became so popular (not to mention game launchers). If your so inclined, try this.... Google TADST, download it, find a tutorial (there is a youtube one here on the fourms), set up a server on your personal machine and you'll see just what its like running one on a dedicated server. You can even join it, customize and tweak it. ;) While I certainly don't endorse trying to run 100 man server on any VDS, 50-60 men on a properly setup VDS is very doable. Remember, just like GSP's, not all VDS software and/or server hosting companies are created equal. There are differences in services, data centers, DDOS protection, etc.
Finuix
Well i'm a admin/arma noob. but i manage it all with GTXgaming. fast restarts (2 min ish) i can update server when new files are out manually or wait for gtx to put it into the tcadmin panel which they do fast so far. i manage scripts. missions etc. when you say you can do more with dedicated. what features are those ? as new to drifting a server i think hosting company was the way to go. maybe upgrade to dedi after i learn more tho :)
PryMary
most hosting companies give you the bare essentials to work with and do not allow for base folder or above mods / additions to be added to the server. Not only this with hosting you will be sharing with other game servers in the same box. On a dedicated server you NEVER will. Its the latter that you are really paying for. drsubo
it depends on what your looking for. Survival Servers are probably the cheapest but not the best. When I had them there servers would go down a lot and the support wasn't the fastest or the best. I had enough issues to where I switched host after about 2 months. My server went down for 4 days and no response from them the whole time till it was back up. So I went to Vilayer. Vilayer is ok but I did have a few times where the server went down for a few hours at a time. Happened about 2 times a week or so. The support was a lot better than Survival servers but still took some time to get back to you. They were helpful tho. After them I went to Gtx servers. They were probably my favorite host I had so far. I have gone through about 5 different host and they have been the quickest to respond to problems and they aren't that expensive either. But even out of all of them I would say your best route would be to set up your own dedi server. I used hosts for about 4 years and I eventually decided to set up my own servers myself on a separate pc I had laying around. I keep that up and running and run all my servers off of that. Probably the best way because you don't have to pay of course and you also have full access to every file and every thing you could possibly need. No need to wait for them to update there files or put things in for you. If your not very knowledgeable on setting up servers there are tons of guides out there. But if that's not an option for you and you really want to go with a host, I would say GTX Servers. Hope this kind of helps
choppra
www.soyoustart.com - by far the best value. You can get a dedi which can hold 2-3 servers for the price of one GSP. with your own dedi you can... Host 2 Servers with ease. Host for own Teamspeak Setup Firedaemon Fusion so you can keep an eye on your servers when youre not around.. The posiblities are endless with your own dedi. You get Anti-DDos too with Soyoustart
TheBigCheese
This is such an interesting thread, I'm learning a whole new side to PC gaming that I had no knowledge of! drsubo, can I ask, what sort of connection speed do you need to be able to run servers from home? Are you one of the lucky few on something with ridiculous upload speeds like Google fibre?

knights†emplar
if you are new admin with not much experience i would recommend you go with a host, its cheaper so do you research and go for the best reviewed host, if you plan on hosting multiple maps, or instances, then it will be much cheaper to go dedicated, but yes you will have to deal with everything yourself, its not hard, my best advice is if you are new new is to turn your own computer to dedicated box and have a play with everything, add scripts bat files to start , back up and then decide if you you like the control and you feel confident go dedicated, remember dedicated is you being dedicated to run it for a while don't expect your server to be full right away.. it might never be for a long time that versus the expense of running a dedicated can be hard to take.... its your call and how much money you are willing to spend is where decisions are made end of the day... just remember dedicated is a lot more expensive if you only plan to run one server and when you don't have a lot of players joining you it can be tough to pay that 100 dollar plus a month...
