What's the deal with the drones?

Tonight I had my first encounter with a drone. It was night and it was raining. As I was scavenging through some buildings I heard the buzzing. Seeing some mention about these things before I knew I should take cover. At one point I did stick my head out of the building to try to get an eye on it and it shot at me. 

 

What is their story? Who is the supposed operator of these things? How deadly are they? I admit. I quickly logged off after it shot at me, afraid of losing my "stuff".

They mean deaths coming, saw one overhead, ignored it and suddenly i'm surrounded by bastards, I'm sure they have names but what they did to me makes them bastards :D

Ah ok. I thought the drone had guns on it. Very cool but yet very very scary at night, in the rain.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i think the Ai spawned by the Drones are persistent now, got killed by the Ai yesterday, ran back to my body (maybe 30min later) thought Sweeet no one around and buggers got me again.
