DrScandalous
Trying to think of the best ways to make money in Epoch... seems like the best way right now (or at least the best way I can think of) is to grab a Mozzie and surf around the map looking for entry-level helis to fix & sell. (Note: I'm not a hero, so my selling options are limited). What's your favorite way to make the cash money?
motionblurrr
Loot cycle the barracks at military bases. Really gets old, but I still perk up when I spot an M14 AIM (10gold). :P <rant> Honestly, one of the things I dislike most about Epoch is how the means to acquire just about anything now seems to be simply to farm goods, sell goods, buy goods. It would be better if there were more than one approach to getting items that was actually worth it. There are still a few items that you have to scavenge the map for to get but this seems to be changing slowly. As of 1.0.3 you can buy building materials at the trade cities. The only "rare" finds I can think of now are documents, lockboxes, combination locks, chainsaws, and sledgehammers, and I bet many server admins are putting these in the trace cities too. Booooo! Sure it adds instant gratification for the players with money, but I find less reasons to play over time once I know I can just go farm guns and buy whatever I need. </rant>

Axle
The original theory behind the traders was that you the player had to sell items to them for them to have stock. But everyone wants fully stocked vendors at all times. I like the armed robbery idea.
Mercules
The original theory behind the traders was that you the player had to sell items to them for them to have stock. But everyone wants fully stocked vendors at all times. I like the armed robbery idea. Yep, I remember the first time I hopped on a server and was like, "WHAT! I can buy NVGs? Only 2 Gold? Wow, I can have NVGs... but at the same time that is a bit lame." Only after I tried to buy them and they were "Out of Stock" did I realize that it wouldn't be that easy. However with a few simple SQL commands the owner can have 50 of every item stocked up so that like the other night on a Vanilla Epoch server I can start out on the coast and in 2 hours time have a locked ATV, Ghillie Suit, MK12SPR, M4A3 CCO, M416 ACOG, PDW SD, plenty of ammo for both, and all the food and drink I could want, as well as one of most of the tools, NVGs, Range Finders, plenty of medical supplies. What wasn't found on the trip to Klen was purchased when I sold off the vehicle and items I had found along the way. Seriously, it wasn't 2 hours and I was kitting out well enough I could survivor for a very long time or actually start in on some PVP/Base Raiding. I've only been playing Epoch for maybe 2-3 weeks. I used to play Taviana 6+ months ago before it died (stopped playing DayZ since then), and the the parallels to Epoch are similar. It's because everyone wants instant gratification, and servers get modded to accomidate this. DayZ is a game that's designed to be a slow playing, survival game, but it's a mod from an armed combat game. It wasn't long before Taviana had the "custom loadout/always day/500+ vehicles/self-bloodbag/custom forts (with crazy loot drops) etc" servers, and it was basically PvP with broken zombies. With Epoch, traders are stocked full, many admins change the buy/sell prices to make it easier, etc. I've played on one server where the admin was limiting the amount of materials to build cinder walls, and it was just a constant stream of players complaining & b!tching until the mod would give in and add more. I've played maybe 2 days on a new server, and I spent most of that time fishing. The admin has increased the price for selling fish, so I've acquired more than enough gear and can start base building or raiding. DayZ standalone doesn't look nearly ready enough for me to spend money, but I'm already getting bored of Epoch and it's only been 2-3 weeks. Eegore
On topic: Kill the crap out of Zeds and get that Hero status as its worth the investment for selling high end vehicles. Less on topic: I agree with the above posts, most Epoch servers are basically giving you everything you need so its mostly PvP or Builder Bob server with some zombies around. This is to attract more players but every now and then you find a server that has some creativity like AI missions but the mission crates aren't Always filled with prime goods, much like heli crashes. The one I play on now has a few spawned vehicles, and a very low packaged food count but animal count is normal so hunt/fish. Matches are super hard to find so there's a challenge to cooking food but there's always a Trader fuel barrel in an emergency. This forces us to use the map, and the environment and it attracts people that miss the old DayZ survival aspect. I'm pretty sure we went a week or two without any fuel loot drops, everyone was trying to get fuel or work out trades to get a generator. Then the large tanks suddenly had blockades around them so people started just making makeshift bases around their stranded vehicles to protect them. We were able to destroy blockades after so many successful AI raids. Really tossed in a survival feeling to the game. It was really nice to see people struggle for supplies instead of hoard them, much like the OP is doing now as a beginner.
DrScandalous
I'm playing Epoch to have fun, man... I did the "true" survival in Vanilla DayZ for quite some time and had fun... but I wanted something that I could play, have more fun and meet some great server folk... which I did. No regrets here. Sorry you feel that the "authentic" way is is the ONLY way to have fun with DayZ.
Eegore
Who said authentic is the only way to enjoy the game? Epoch is fun, you just have to find the server that you like. I played on a server that had every gun/vehicle etc for 1 silver each and that was fun but only for a while.
DrScandalous
Just killed my first bandits a couple days ago. I'm officially addicted now. 3 bandit squad usually yields: 1 SVD, AK-M, 2 ghillies, 2 civilian clothing, 1 AK which (on my server) = 16 gold bars. Super easy/passive way to make cash while playing at night... they're pretty much clueless when they're walking around and I sneak up on them in my SUV. :)
