  1. did your server admin update the sql?

Hmmm... well, I know that after he first patched, somehow the database got reset and he had to restore it from a several hour old backup.  Sounds like this issue is related to the restored SQL.

Off the top of your head, what else might be missing/broken if we don't have the database updates?

  2. Yes!  This is precisely how this experience should pan out for any individual!  Not to say "Hey go waste some time farming."...but you get the idea.  You put the work in and were rewarded with a chainsaw, I bet it felt great.

Btw, what color did you find?

I found blue.  Any difference in the colors?

Btw, I told some of the people on the server I trust to go in search of the oil and if they provide me a can I will cut down a forest for them and let them have all the lumber.  Way way more fun cutting than it is picking it up.  :)

  3. I've been coding C and PHP for 15 years and the no.1 thing everyone knows is that if you share your code with others, make sure its well commented and that its easy to understand and use by others.

This is true when you insert "when you're being paid" somewhere in there.  When you're not being paid, all bets are off.  I agree, better documentation is better, but when you are spending your free time on something like this mod, I think it's OK to cut them some slack.

  4. Our server was updated to 1.0.3 last night so a friend and I searched the farm areas for 3 hours before we found one... WORTH. EVERY. MOMENT.

Pro-tip: when you find the chainsaw, go somewhere with a lot of trees and with a lot of storage (like a Ural) and cut everything down and store it.  The chainsaw I found was full (1000 fuel) and I think even had a 2nd "clip", but I logged out after only using ~400 and it was totally empty when I got back on.

  5. Loot cycle the barracks at military bases.  Really gets old, but I still perk up when I spot an M14 AIM (10gold). :P

    <rant>

Honestly, one of the things I dislike most about Epoch is how the means to acquire just about anything now seems to be simply to farm goods, sell goods, buy goods.  It would be better if there were more than one approach to getting items that was actually worth it.  There are still a few items that you have to scavenge the map for to get but this seems to be changing slowly.  As of 1.0.3 you can buy building materials at the trade cities.  The only "rare" finds I can think of now are documents, lockboxes, combination locks, chainsaws, and sledgehammers, and I bet many server admins are putting these in the trace cities too.  Booooo!  Sure it adds instant gratification for the players with money, but I find less reasons to play over time once I know I can just go farm guns and buy whatever I need.

    </rant>

  6. Yeah, well, they are rare right? I could just up the price

I'm with Sequisha on this.  The more things that get added to the trader cities, the less actual scavenging gameplay your players will have.  It ends up making Epoch almost exclusively about making gold, not surviving.

  7. Does a plot pole prevent other players from removing items?

    • Tank Trap Kits
    • Sand Bags
    • H-Barriers
    • Metal Panels

I put up a plot pole and some metal panels and two other players told me they did NOT get a mouse wheel option to remove the metal panels.  So, I assumed that meant it was the plot pole preventing that option from showing up... which is great!  However, later on I died and when I got back to my base I did not expect to get the option to remove the metal panels until I had a chance to remove and replace the plot pole (since plot poles are tied to your "life") but I did have the option.   So this makes me second guess whether or not the other two players didn't get the remove option due to the plot pole or some other sort of issue they were having (such as recently changing skins or something).

Note: My experience above was with Epoch v1.0.2.5.

    Thanks!

  8. I started off with a 7 player day z vanilla vet server and then I found epoch. Since then im the same as Crystal and havent been as excited as I would have been back in the day about the standalone. Epoch is too good, I dont know how I used to play on a standard day z server.

I was starting to feel the same way, but once you have played Epoch enough, you may discover that you have everything you want/need and there is nothing else to do but PVP, which I think detracts from the soul of the post-apocalyptic style.  People should attack other players because the other player has something they want/need... but since eventually anyone can get what they want/need by selling/buying at the traders, you can end up bored and decide that you need excitement by killing other players.  Then once that starts on a server, you end up with experienced/well-equipped players griefing new players along the coast.

Luckily, I'm a hoarder, so there is always more safes to buy and fill up.  ;)

  9. I bought one last night once I was able to log in. You are technically incorrect. It holds a backpack. What that means is that if I have two different types of backpacks I could throw one in the Mozzie and tool around with it. Once at a location I could swap out of my normal backpack, load stuff into the alternate, then swap back and use that as "storage". I believe things in backpacks in vehicles vanish on server restarts though so it would be limited and they HAVE to be different types of backpacks. Still I could put a lot of Cinderblocks/mortar buckets/lumberpacks into even a gunbag. ;)

I remember seeing that it had one backpack storage when you do a cargo check but I don't think I could get the gear menu to come up.  Maybe I'm wrong though.  Definitely not a bad idea though... if you're very careful.  :)

  10. If you're new to Arma or vanilla DayZ, by all means, learn the inventory system early on.  Learn about the quirks and how you can lose stuff when you add something to a container that's full (so that you can hopefully avoid doing it too often).

Same goes for learning how to ditch zombies.  Surely you realize that they walk while inside of a building but run while outside, but you may not know:

    1) You can lose them by running through the branch area on the shorter evergreen trees.

    2) You can lose them by getting out of their line of site (though they will still come to where they last saw you and if they can still here you or see you they will continue).

    3) You are safe from zombies inside the front window area of the hospital (it's a safe zone).

    4) They won't follow you onto the docks (or any area that is over water I think).

    5) You can put some distance between them by vaulting (v) over short fences.

    6) You can usually outrun them when running up a steep hill if you angle a little bit so that you are running while they end up trying to go straight up and have to walk.

Learn how to use the waypoint system on your map (basically shift-click to mark a spot and see it in your normal 3D view along with it's distance).  It's invaluable and a total game changer for anyone who doesn't know how to use it.

Your first major purchase should be a Safe (default price is 1 Briefcase).  If you're lucky and you get a lockbox off of a zombie (not a combination lock) then maybe you can delay this purchase until later.  I can't tell you how many people I've seen rage about how they filled up a Ural with loot only to come back on and find it stolen or destroyed.

Some guns can use SD ammo and when you fire them, the zombies won't "hear" it, but you and other players will.  For this reason, I never use a non-suppressed weapon with suppressed ammo unless nobody else is on the server.  I know this was true in DayZ, but someone please correct me if it's not true in Epoch.

Research/explore the wood base building system and plan out your base before you start.

Don't eject out of an air vehicle unless you're high enough (75m or so) to get the chute to deploy.  :)

Morphine Autoinjector:  Don't leave home without it.  Painkillers, food, drink... all really important to keep on you.

Figure out what you favorite weapon is.  Sell everything else.  Fine if you want to keep your favorite assault rifle, favorite sniper rifle, favorite suppressed assault rifle, etc...

Don't use your vehicle as a means of disposing Zombies.  I can't tell you how many times I've seen someone crash their vehicle doing this... Triple /facepalm for the time it was a full fuel truck.

Don't discount the Mozzie.  That is one awesome flying machine and (by default) only costs 4 Gold.  It's loud and there's pretty much no protection, but it's a great little chopper for the price.

  11. We had our second base (our first real base) inside the second hangar from the north at nwaf, i know the problem with zeds, but at that time i did not know that surrounding ur base with walls (360 degrees closed) would stop zombies from entering, so instead we built floors (3 levels) inside the hangar, and some stuff on the roof (I play epoch like minecraft with PvP :P)

We built some stairs up to the windows in the hangar but discovered what appears to be an invisible ceiling.  Did you encounter that at all?

  12. I have 30 meter plot pole, but every time I've placed it in the world, it immediately falls down.  If this is anything like barbed wire fences, that means it is "destroyed" and will disappear on restart, so I always pick it up immediately.  I saw someone else say that it falls down too easily, but I still don't get whether or not it's supposed to do that and (more importantly) if it will stay after a restart and continue to prevent others from building.

I think 3.0 is supposedly going to require a plot pole to build, so maybe I should just wait before placing it, but I'd love to hear what others know about how this works.

    Thanks!
