I recommened renting a dedicated box. Xeon E3 should be fine, but you have to setup everything on your own.
I also recommened not renting any server. There are 4000 Epoch servers right now and the player base is decresing. You will probably just waste money. As I said: just my recommendation.
@vbawol: Somthing is wrong with that link. It adds a %C2%A0 at the end of the URL.

I dont think there is a way to predict the SteamID since it has just nothing to do with Arma. I think the Steam ID is coming from Steam alone and was there long before Arma 2.

That thread is kinda obsolete since you find all informations in here:
No, you cant predict the new SteamID. Tell your players in MOTD to save their stuff in safes. You could help them getting their stats and gear back but that is up to you and admin/db work. Some here think its an nightmare, but I think they are just lazy or dont know their tools.
So yes, that actually means you have to do something as an admin. Suprise!

At least something. Thx for the info.

Couldnt you find an older thread? *inside meme about reviving old threads here*

Their is another problem that came in my mind with the new beta patch situation: player will automatically update as soon as they start the game. Servers not. You dont start your server via steam and most people have a task system to restart their server.
It could be that a patch gets released, clients update automatically and server stays outdated until an admin notice it. Which means incompatibility. :(
-
Sounds good. Any source on that information?

Database query that replaces the database appearance of the old one with the new one. As I said: do it only on request like in your server forum or so, its easy but a few days of admin work for you.
-
Well, how bad is that really? 90% of the dayz player die once a day. You still have the old character data. Just copy the data over. On request of course. Additional admin work for two days.
-
And everyone who doesn't do it will never get back on your server since there is no known way to patch to a specific beta version. I would rather go with the fear of the appearance of a game breaking beta patch.
-
Red it now. That stuff makes sense, but I dont think that you will find a solution for that, BetterThanZed. You just cant predict what the new number of the player will be.
Which leads us again back to the problem I mentioned before. Beta patches will appear randomly. Clients will always load them before playing the game and these beta patches can destroy quite some stuff. So there is a risk in every new day from now on :D

Quickly looked into a server database.
- PlayerUID is connected to your PlayerName in the player_data
- PlayerUID is connected to your CharacterID in the player_login (but that is not really important)
- PlayerUID is connected to your CharacterID in the character_data
Dont have access to code or my account right now. So the PlayerUID is the UID or the PlayerID?
Edit: posted after reading this comments above. Sry
-
So which one is again linked to your character in the database? UID or PlayerID? As I said: too many numbers for a single game.
-
Hmm... will "PlayerID is now SteamID" require any sort of database changes? What about mods that use PlayerID?
I think the number just changed. So the number that is assigned to your character is another now. Which means that the system of the server will create a new character since it thinks that that fellow is a new player.
Small things need to be done by the player like plotpoles need to be replaced and so on.
Could also be that I mix something up. Too many numbers for a single mod :D

Wonder if the overall server quality would increase, if they would forbid GSPs to run their Mod. Most of the time I see broken stuff on Nitrado and co servers. Never been on a server that was running on a dedicated machine, setup by the owner himself and maintained by him. It's just a bigger step for server owner wannabees. Knowledge and skill would be more important than money. Everyone can pay 40 bucks and call them self an admin. Seeing 4000 Epoch servers in DZC, knowing that their are maybe 12000 Epoch Mod players left scares the shit out of me. I guess 95% of these servers run on virtual machines of GSPs.

You say more informations as we get closer to 0.5. To add a relation, where are we right now? I guess 0.1 will be the first version people will be allowed to play. So we are before 0.1. Stuff takes time which is ok, but I would assume 0.5 will not be here before the end of the year right. Can you share any time information related to your roadmap? I am not talking about "in 24 days you will...." or "in the beginning of august you will...". I am talking more about "0.1 will be released soon and 0.5. is to expect in the beginning of 2015" stuff.
Can you share any information like that?
-
He will be able since they have to share their code, but they could forbid to put that stuff in or forbid people to run a server with a modified Epoch Mod. I guess there will be an option to add it as Pull Request to their Git.
I understand why they do it, but my interest in that Mod almost died since I guess they will hit 1.0 and open up modding for the MOD in a year or so. That shit takes time and they are not working 24/7 on it. But I dont think that players will be turned off by that roadmap. Well, depends. If the original A3 Epoch design is shit and people are not allowed to change it, player will be pissed by it. But I dont expect it since there is no reason for doing so.
-
And there it starts. 125402 is out. Any idea how to handle the issue I talked about before?
-
Wonder if BI actualy will. Hope so since they changed the licence model for a reason, but sueing someone on an international base is quite complex, expensive and taken out of context it could lead to some really bad press.
-
One more confusion about the steam beta patching. If I set it to beta it will update the game to 1.63.124879. Let's say BI releases another patch tomorrow, it will automatically update, right? Let's say to 1.63.130000. What if Epoch is not compatible with that one or it just causes crashes?
Is there a way to force a 1.63.124879 version/update? Or is the only option to disable beta after updating again, but if so, what is with the player who didn't do that. How do they get back to 1.63.124879?
-
What is ZFM?
Edit: Found out. How about you request that via PM.
-
Well what people have to do is activating arma steam beta autopatching, download the patch and deactivate arma steam beta autopatching again.
Yes that sounds easy, but you know people. That will be some rough times. Try to explain to a regular Epoch gamer why they have to wait for 1.0.5. until 30 June. They will just not understand. They are not stupid, but its just a game. They want the easy way.
And I dont think that it is to easy to get the steam patch as an installer for DZC. I think people have to do the hard way via steam.
Time will tell. Dont expect an increase of player. Expect a decrease.

Pictures!!! :D
Recommend a server provider

Now I am curious:
On what hardware is a Vert server running? And is it a dedi box or a virtual machine?
