makasouleater
I currently run NFO gaming server VDS Two core: Good for 1-6 game servers or intense website. Two full, dedicated HT CPU cores (Nehalem or better) 2048 MB of RAM 200 GB of RAID-protected storage 3000 GB of InterNAP bandwidth transfer with upgraded to 5gbs of ram, and 25gbs ssd. With 2 players, with missions, sarge ai on low settings, it seems to need a restart every 4 hours or so, and uses all the cpu. If i upgraded to something like this Intel Xeon E3-1230 v2 4 x 3.3 GHz 16GB 1 x 1TB SATA HDD 100 Mbps 10 TB Which is from web hosting buzz, they tell me it is a fully dedicated machine, vrs the VPS/VDS that nfo has. Do you think i would notice any increase in performance? The price is more than double, so that is why i was seeking advice. Thanks muchly for any help. 0 Namindu
first list the specs of both plans, and tell us the prices so, we can tell if you getting ripped off or not. I personnel recommend "Regencyhost.com". There my server host, +6 50/50 server and it dose not lag at all. They pay people to just to quickly reply to your support ticket and they link you to the data center where you box is held and its all done in secs. 0 makasouleater
The vps/vds from nfo gaming servers I had was a 2 core x5 2650 xeon with 5gbs of ram 200gb 7200 rpm hard drive and a 25gb ssd. It cost 59.99, and sucked really bad now that i have a full machine. The xlhost machine i have now is a i7 4770 8gbs of ram 2 128gb ssds. Its 134 a month. It can keep the same server i had on the vps running for over 12 hours, the cpu isnt even close to maxed. Like it was all the time on nfos, and the ai setting were turned way way down on the vps. I have alot more ai on it the xlhost one. I am really happy with it. I dono if i am getting ripped off or not. I couldent find a site that would give me 2 ssd windows 12 r2 a processor like a i7 for any where near 134. All the ones i looked at but xlhost wanted outrageous money a month for a ssd. some of them were as high as 60 bucks. I really like having the sql on one ssd and the server on another. Let me know if theres anything better. Thanks muchly for the reply. I know this i would never try to use a Vps to host a game again.
0 makasouleater
O wow no way would i go to regencyhost, they dont even offer a ssd. And to get what i have ever close they want over 169.00 for the base server 29.99 for windows 12, and 29.99 more for 10000gbs 100mbs connection. Thats like twice the amount, and it takes them 72 hours to set it up. Xlhost had mine going within 12 hours and on a sunday. That company sounds terrible. Budget Dedicated Servers - Scranton - Xeon E3-1230-V2 QUAD CORE 3.3GHZ is basicly the same as a i7 4770, you can get that on xlhost for 99.99 though if you prefer a server board instead of a desktop. For that price, i could get the e3 xeon 1000mbs connetion 20000gbs a month, and some other things.
0 Darth_Rogue
You don't need an SSD for DayZ mod. The only benefit would be a quicker server restart. It only takes about two minutes for the server to restart on a traditional hard drive, so in my opinion you're wasting your money on an SSD. Once the server is loaded it runs entirely from memory except for reads and writes to the hive. And for normal server usage a traditional hard drive has plenty of bandwidth. I run two DayZ servers on my dedi box and I've never had any HD lag. What I can tell you from my own experience is that Arma does not like to run well in a virtual environment. It much prefers bare hardware. So if you have the ability to get a deal on a full box that is within your budget then that's the route I would go. I would also stress the fact that if you intend to run AI addons on your server that you spring for a quad core CPU, as the AI units will eat up a lot of CPU horsepower, especially if you use heli patrols. Also, you can run a couple DayZ servers on a 100MB connection easily. A gigabit connection is certainly not a requirement. I have a lot of love for NFO. They're a great company with the best support in the industry, but they're far from the cheapest when it comes to boxes. Then again, you do get what you pay for with them. No need for window 12, all you need is windows Web server 2008, which runs just as fine, it cause of licensing required by windows. No need for Xeon, you just looking at brand names. Look at the specs. The I5, is what i started with and it was great. I managed to get a deal with the i7 so i upgraded since i want the best i can get. If you keep looking around for brand names, then you might as well not host server, since your going to spend more money needed. Look at a budget, not names.
