How Do Wood Towers Work?

I just can't get these to work.  How do you build them?  On top of raised floor?  It's as if they build upside down.  I know I'm missing something but can't figure it out.

You craft a wooden floor first then click on that and craft wooden tower thing (need additional 4 lumber packs). Once you done it, you get wooden tower kit and can build it anywhere or even use it as a foundation (saw people doing that, looks pretty cool). Then after you built it you can add half walls to surround it (on each side of tower pole there will be option to add this half wall) takes also 1 or 2 lumber packs each action.

It is named like that because it is a thing which usually used in "sniping towers" aka giving you advantage to look around while standing and crouched if you get shot at. Of course, you can shoot through wood easily so I would no advice using it as defense mechanism unless you put cinder half wall inside that wooden half wall.
