  1. This is not about complaining. It also isn't about anyone's masochistic fantasies about what survival should mean in a game. Epoch is survival light, the mod's focus is on other things (say, base building, looting, shooting AI and other players in the face). Above all, it's a game and as such its mechanics should be judged accordingly. The current implementation of broken legs syndrome is a harsh punishment. Worse (more time consuming and frustrating) than death perhaps. However, in many cases the punished player could not have done anything to avoid the punishment - he may even have played extremely well (therefore surviving long enough to worry about broken legs). That's simply bad design and it should be imroved. (Carrying medkits does obviously help, but people will often find themselves in a leg endangering situation well before they could have realistically found or bought one.)

  2. Breaking Point would be alright if their system didn't depend entirely on identifying people based on their hats.

Seriously, there may be someone shooting at you from a respectable distance - you return fire, kill the bastard & promptly find out that he belonged to a faction that your faction is supposed to be friendly to. Bam, huge penalty, untold hours of progress down the drain... because you failed to verify the guy's hat before *returning* fire.

Hasn't happened to me, but I've seen it in youtube videos / heard about it from friends.

That said, I also don't play A3 Epoch atm. Maybe the update will make things more interesting again. As it is, I find better PVP in CTI modes (EUTW is really good), survival is way more interesting in Standalone (which can have interesting tactical situations, too) and building bases is kind of pointless when all you're doing is provide one more target for the bored masses.

  3. A game mechanic which regularly leaves suicide as the only viable / desirable option is just plain broken.

While aiming for someone's legs is an interesting tactical option, the condition doesn't add anything outside of combat.

I'd much prefer a solution like craft-able splints or even automatic removal of the condition after a few minutes of resting / sitting down.

Before anyone screams "easy mode" - there hardly is anything less "hardcore" than meta-gaming it through intentional respawn.

That said, the mod has more pressing fields of development, such as providing any motivation to play apart from occasional PVP, pressing "I" in the vicinity of trash piles for hours & building raid targets for other bored players. Hopefully the broken leg issue will simply get some attention along the way.

  4. Good luck with MGT. I messaged him about the need to have counters if you are going to introduce fun stuff like HMG Hunters. Apparently, the counter is mortars (which can also be found.)

MGT seems to have a specific vision when it comes to server balance. 100/100 players seem to agree with that vision. I don't, which is quite unfortunate, really - they *do* take care of their server otherwise.

  5. People really don't realize what being an (or THE) admin on a successful server actually is like.

Takes a rare and special kind of person to do for any appreciable amount of time. Just like with Altis Life, a few month in we will see a few large and robust communities maintaining high player counts + a few medium-sized servers doing their thing.

I'm way more worried about the direction that people are taking their servers even in this rather locked down state. It's extremely hard to find a well frequented server (with a decent ping, which sadly means no Mell's for me) that doesn't come with armored (sometimes also armed) vehicles and yolo-extra-uber-loot settings.

  6. Considering the mileage we are getting out of ARMA 3 and the effort BI are putting into developing the platform, I think some active encouragement to cough up a few extra $ for extra content is reasonable. Chances are that we can afford it if we are sitting in front of the kind of pc that can handle A3 multiplayer.

  7. This creates a situation where "random bush in the middle of nowhere" becomes a more reasonable place for your lockbox than the actual base, where people might actively look for it. Sounds like a bad mechanic.

I get it, we want this harsh environment where death and loss are "real" and meaningful. Wiping out someone's rewards for days or weeks of effort should still require a bit more than some kid with a trollface and a lynx. For me, Epoch is all about about combining the punishing mechanics of DayZ (death comes quickly and degrades you back to newspawn) with some degree of persistence and longterm purpose. Others are in it for the trolling, which is fine, too. Right now I feel the mod leans a bit too far towards enabling & rewarding the purely destructive style, though.

  8. Taking care of your character's hunger & thirst stats can be quite demanding in the beginning. It does keep things more interesting, though.

Being well supplied with food & drink should be something we have to work for. I imagine it might be cool to be able to start greenhouses & water purification facilities in our bases, as long as actually constructing and maintaining them offers a decent challenge. Not sure trivializing the physical needs of our characters by simply lowering the consumption rates is the way to go, though.

  9. Nice work on the maps! Is there anyway to save the maps as an image file like a jpeg? Currently I have them saved to a shortcut that opens Firefox to view them. Thanks!

Actually there is a "save" option in the lower right corner of the lightbox.

I already saved them in case the originals get deleted for some reason.

    Thanks for the maps, OP!

Got me thinking, it should be quite possible to create a site comparable do iZurvive / dayzdb for Epoch.

  10. I for one don't have a problem with fantasy inspired antagonists, as long as they have a well thought out background and contribute positively to the overall richness of the game.  Going up against fantastical opponents (that don't exclusively crave brains) with our milsim arsenal should make for a pretty unique experience, really. Bring on those dragons straight out of Skyrim, I say!
