  1. while we're at it:

base building is what I love about epoch but most servers can't really handle that many objects. you guys ever considered some kind of horizontal scaling for objects or some kind of cache for that?

I don't know much about game development but for example one of my clients is running a horizontal architecture (and shard for database) where he just serves data through a central and a load balancer so new (virtual machines) are deployed in seconds, if there's a traffic peak it handles everything gracefully...

but back on my question: basically you could just rent additional servers just to handle objects/vehicles (no need to deploy them on the fly, it was just an example), maybe even divide the map in regions and keep a server for each one. maybe the main server could do all the validation and the others act just as cache/cpu offload?

I know the client side implications but at least on A2 is the server fps that gets me everytime

  2. You have to be the owner and have not died since placement. Have a crowbar and a toolbox in your toolbelt.

Note: this only works for modular items.

    "not died since placement"

Can't this limitation be removed? Admins are constantly bothered by users asking to remove walls. Specially now that you need a pole to start your base, lots of people rushing construction so they don't get the pole stolen.

  3. So I have my base already built. Will I be able to remove my own objects on the next patch, or only the objects I add after the patch?

    Also:

[ADDED] Area maintenance of bases @vos (Axe Cop) @dayz10k

Is this the "maintenance by gold"? If so, can you add an option to check how many hours left you have before you have to pay?

    bye

  4. I really like Bungle's idea, especially "Cannot be Removed/Destroyed".

DayZ vision made me start playing the mod but after months and months of dealing with ArmA 2 engine (heaven and hell at the same time), me and my friends (and a big part of the community, as you can see this behavior reflect in server configuration, custom mods and popularity) became tired of most of the mechanics. To me DayZ should be more like a mix of survivability (zeds, resources, planning), PVP and MMORPG elements like permanent housing, crafting, etc.

The "risk of losing" things would be justified if there was skill involved in the process of hiding, building or destroying things. You cannot hide anything on a map so small (even Origins' taviana is small, IMO), the best ways of hiding tents are using glitches of the game, and the best way of finding it is also by using glitches (video settings make you see tents from 10km). There's no such things as building objects to mimic the terrain pattern, there's no caves, limited number of islands, you can't dig a hole, you can't plant trees. And let's not forget map hackers.

  5.   I agree, that's why I think removal should be resource intensive and time-consuming.

I also do not think built items should be indestructible, and permanent on a server forever as people might want to remove them for multiple reasons.  It should not be easy to remove structures though.

ok I agree, as long as you need to place 3 SUV near the object you want to remove, and it costs 12 10oz gold bars.. with a 10% chance of success

  6. Epoch is adding MMORPGish elements, housing should work similar too. It doesn't give you any real advantage or edge over other people, you can't store anything that can't be stoled (I mean storable buildings), only the safe and that's a really expensive thing on the mod, it's just an element to make people go around the map gathering stuff and maybe camping other player bases, increasing the PVP, improving the economy and saving whales.

How many times do you think people will try to build anything if it's really like we both describe, days, weeks to build and just a few minutes to destroy anything? Chernarus is so freaking small and with low video settings you can spot a can on the ground, from a heli. They will not build, if they came to the mod looking for something similar to Origins (without retarded devs) how long do you think it will take for them to leave?

  7.   If items could never be destroyed I would just make barriers in front of other bases rendering them permanently unusable.

You can't do that with Epoch buildables, if original DayZ objects are not using the same mechanic (my server is not updated) is just a matter of fixing that.

The 30 Meter Plot Pole gives you the ability to build in a 60 meter radius from the center.

    • Tagging someone gives you the ability to build on their plot. They also get the ability to build on your plot.

What about situations where people have left a server but their stuff is in the way?  I lose humanity.

What about people the block buildings, roads with barriers and I unblock them, I'd lose humanity.

There's configuration settings to remove unused objects, they could be expanded to all the buildings if that is a problem (dunno what's the best option like making the owner do some action on the pole itself, there's several ways). You can block the construction of any objects around buildings and roads (just take a look at Daimyo's base building script).

I do not recommend turning people into bandits over construction issues.  I do however think removing items should take longer than they do now, such as the aforementioned loss of toolbox method.

Adjusting build times would be useful though.

Is up to an admin to clean up things that are not used, and from the devs to block mechanics exploitation. I really cannot believe people think objects like this should be removable by other people, they must never played on a hive with bandits. Or at least good bandits.

Give me an helicopter, a few hours and a server with destructible buildings and I will take everything you took days or weeks to gather. It's stupid, really.

  8. there's more ways but from what I can remember right now:

    • Logout with a chopper on top of the base, when you login you are inside (if the base has a roof)
    • Park a car near the wall, make it go inside the wall a little bit, when you get out of the vehicle you can go through the walls. If there's more them a single wall it's still possible as long as they don't have huge gaps between them and you don't move sideways
    • Place a wirefence in the opposite direction of the wall, leave a small gap between the wall and the fence. Combat roll on top of that and you're inside. Like this: http://i.imgur.com/WWM9NrL.jpg
    • Build a terminal (the one you type the password) near the base you want to go in, there's usually a 300m block but that's nothing with a vehicle, type the password and once you're authenticated you can run to the base and open the terminal. Just need to be fast to avoid the 15~30 seconds session timeout.
    • Build multiple gates (doors) inside the wall or near the base door, sometimes when the owner open it, it will glitch and he can't close the gate anymore. The base will remain open until the next restart.
  9. I think klen and bash should be safe zones but not stary, make it more bandit oriented so you have a central pvp zone

I don't usually like this kind of thing put after playing in a 50/50 server it's near impossible to do anything, people don't even bother going to the trade centers.

  10. since they serve no real function in the pvp meta-game or anything like that, they should be indestructible

should work just like a classic mmo house that you can't destroy or do any permanent damage.. with the added "dayz" flavor (full loot/perma death): you can kill people inside of it and steal from camping tents/open safes

if you can destroy things there's really no reason to do anything, it's SO freaking easy to find and destroy things, a single person with enough time can destroy everything from a server, just need a little brain and a chopper

  11. I only use dayz commander to keep track of few servers that are not on gametracker and to check what version most people are using. Much easier to download mods and updates with DownThemAll! (firefox extension) since it can handle multiple connections, multiple mirrors and even pause/resume downloads.

  12. I placed a tent and put some gear like 2 weapons, 2 clips and like 15 items. The next day I looted everything and left it alone. Now everytime the server resets it's always the same items inside (2 weapons, 2 clips, 15 items), even if you put new items (you lose them). This happens on vanilla DayZ too.
