raymix
Totally unrelated to forum, but I am so hyped up about tomorrow, decided to share this anyway: New up close images of Pluto received today: https://www.nasa.gov/feature/new-horizons-spacecraft-displays-pluto-s-big-heart-0 On Wednesday July 15, more images of surface close-ups will make more than four-hour journey to Earth at the speed of light to give Pluto fans details as small as New York’s Central Park. “Our data tomorrow (Wednesday, July 15) will have ten times the resolution of what we see today and it will knock your socks off,” said Stern. Monk
Yep, I can't wait to take a look at those images :D And for those of you not familiar with Pluto, here is a diagram showing just how far away it is and how long it has taken the "New Horizons" craft/probe to reach Pluto. To give the 9 years it has taken to reach Pluto a bit of context, here is a few things that happened in the first half of 2006 Jan 2006 - New Horizons launches. Mar 2006 - The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion launches Jul 2006 - Twitter launches to the public DirtySanchez
raymix
Found one more interesting quote I didn't know about: New Horizons mission hasn't set it's sights on pluto alone - there is a plan to extend the mission to the objects in the Kuiper Belt. In the "Ice Hunter" mission, NASA has asked the public to help pick objects of interest. Well I guess that kinda makes up for not landing a probe on pluto.... kinda *cries in a corner*
DirtySanchez
9 years to get there and 16 months to survey, we will know plenty about Pluto in the coming months. should be fantastic. Was chatting someone up about it the other night and they didn't even know pluto had moons. 5 to be exact. raymix
