If its a primary pvp focused server just a safe in cherno, why ever leave town :}  Also some of the building in the bigger towns have interesting roofs that would make great hidouts, be creative with ladders and see what you can do :}

I build on non pvp servers, and use tents to stash loot on pvps.

A good base building spot is skalka, i have my base there on multiple different servers. you can look down over the edge but they cant look up. pretty flat too!

Now for the people building complex bases within, or by barns. How are you keeping the zombies out or keeping them from spawning in your base? I'm designing my servers base and this is eluding me.

LOl no they don't.  You have to go 1 level up to not worry about them, or build over water on the coast.
