Building

Hey, im probably just a noob at this but could someone please explain how the base building works. We were able to make some wooden floor items and wall items but placing them was extremely confusing, couldnt figure out the snapping and how do you stop building parts from just falling over or moving uncontrolably after being placed? Thanks

I have looked at the controls forum post however we still had trouble with building, are there specific things other than just the items needed, our building was mainly just spamming number keys.

This is the biggest issue I have run into.  Unfortunately I do not have a helpful answer to your question, but I want to flesh out the building instructions for people who are having trouble and also note what my issues with building are.

Here is how one goes about building.

Crafting: Using a hatchet as your secondary, you are able to hit trees which will drop wooden logs.  Double click the logs and you are able to craft lumber packs.  From the lumber packs you are able to craft wooden floors, stairs, and wall frames.  You can then double click on these to enter into placing the item.

Initial placement:  This is where the system starts to struggle, and please someone correct my if I am wrong.  When you are first placing the item you have no control with insert, delete, home, end, pgup or pgdn, for vertical, and horizontal control.  The only placement allowed is based on where you can get your character.  To place the piece hit 4.  This building piece will not move.  It is stuck there, which is what we want when building.

Second placement: Because of the inability to get precise placement of building objects there is a second placement mode to building objects.  You can toggle build mode 1 with the 1 key or 2 with the 2 key.  Hitting either 1 or 2 a second time will disable build mode. To grab a building piece walk up to the wall, floor, etc and hit space bar.   Build mode 1 uses snap to object which will place objects flush with one another which is what most people want and can be changed and toggled with the 3 key.  This will help rotate how the object snaps to your structure.  In build mode 2 you can change orientation with  insert, delete, home, end, pgup, or pgdn for vertical and horizontal control.  The BIG issue here is the placement.  You do all the work to get this piece fitting perfectly and then you can not place the object.  pressing the 4 key like in the initial placement does not work.  You have to press 1 or 2 to disable build mode and when you do this the piece "drops"  physics gets applied, unlike in the initial placement phase.  It seems like after you snap the building together you should be able to hit 4 and have the piece stay where you need it.  I cant tell you how many times I have tried to place a wall or floor and once I let go the floor falls on one end or the wall tips over. Very infuriating!

Upgrading: The last element is another place where people have been having issues.  You can upgrade the wall frames to walls.  This requires salvage metal (small).  You face your wall and press ctrl+i (not noted anywhere in documentation)  You can then select upgrade.  This will finish the wall.  From here you can press ctrl+i on the wall again to upgrade it to having a door space.  From the door you can with more metal upgrade to a door.

Hopefully this will help someone with the building process.

Currently it seems easier to deal with a wonky building and leaving the piece after your initial placement than dealing with picking it back up and having it constantly falling over.

building is going to get reworked and they are going to change it so pieces can mesh with other objects which is what is causing people to get injured and killed right now while building in certain situations...   its really not worth building much at the moment... the only things I build are teepees, and frequency jammers (aka plot pole) and even that is bugged too

We will be adding the ability to define your own controls and further refine the flow of crafting ~~> building. For now see the controls here:

One of the things that should be added if it isn't already and I am just missing it? Is anything we craft or place should be able to be destroyed so if we place it wrong we didn't just mess up our house and now have a pile of junk sitting there. We started a building and then discovered a frequency jammer. Didn't know what it did and plopped it down. Now we can't build there. More items in the world taking up build space

as far as i know you cannot unbuild your plot pole, move it or anything else, once built thats it.  As for deleting unwanted build's etc, you cannot do this either, as one post above says, we need the ability to delete say an unwanted stud wall etc, i raised this in a previous thread - if we unbuild we should receive half of the wood/metal/cinder block originally used to create it.

Also wood walls should be brought in, studd wall to wood wall to metal wall to metal wall with door frame to opening door and so on.

:D

whining/feedback call it what you want, its still ideas for the dev team to look at, go act big man on other forums d-bag.

Where the hell have all these d**cks come from who just try to flame people on a forum, go rage at others on CS go or something.

People know how the alpha test works and what to expect from the updates etc.  Again go flame elsewhere

Back to OP - check out Mendecks youtube channel, he has a few videos on there on the how to in regards to moving building objects etc, they are really helpful.

Has anyone both on the forums/devs mentioned moveable plot pole yet?  Would be great if at someone we could move this if people decide to move a base etc.

Im around on GPD tonight, had a few days off due to overtime at work - there are 6 of us normally if anyone is a lone wolf or just wants to move around in a group for a while hit me up.

Have fun, dont hate, donate ;)
