Are you actually *trying* to continue making an ass out of yourself? First of all, I'm not "raking" over you, I'm confronting you and others like you, because what you do is drive people like Face away. I've confronted other people as well who were bitching at Face, someone who, clearly deserves NO SHIT WHATSOEVER. This isn't singling you out, as I wrote "You and others like you". But you make the assumption that I don't know Face's position, I do know, because he told me. And yes I'm blaming you and others who behaved like you did, yours and others contributed to Face's leaving. But even furthermore I'm blaming the attitude you and others like you have.
Apologizing is great, owning your mistake is even better.

Dude, the damage you and others like you did is already done. This temper tantrum alone is telling enough. You came off as an entitled asshole and Face reacted. Anything you do after that in terms of damage control is all to try and save face. And Face already discontinued his community support indefinitely.
Here's the thing though, the guy barely had much time to spare on this project to begin with. Giving mod support was actually something he did in spite of feeling that his instructions in the OP should be enough. He's wasted a lot of time and energy that he really does not have to spare needlessly, and to what end? People who are negative, for whatever reason always make a bigger impact than those who are positive. Probably it is because it is so unfathomable that you can get ANY criticism at all when you give away something for free.

Tobias Solem got a reaction from Panduhh in What is the vision, the "Why?" of Epoch?
It is clear what Epoch is, and how you play it. So that is not what my question is about, because those two questions (what and how) I can understand easily myself, but something has been nagging me ever since Epoch for ARMA 3 was released in its first alpha, and the more information I get on it, the more I realize that there's so much of what and how that it leaves a void in the "why"-department, so basically that's something I would like to have answered, because it would help me understand WHY things like the construct were planned in the first place, and why frequency jammers started out at 300 meters, and perhaps even why the mod balances soldier simulator with survival, with weird toungue-in-mouth items like Purple nurple, funny masks, etc. with building and these fantasy monsters. Without understanding the "why" it all seems a bit like a jumble of ideas thrown into one.

Now, before you start quoting me the first paragraph of the mod's front page (which is a bunch of "what") I would like to be clear what it is I am looking for; I'm not so much interested in knowing what it is that you (the devs) want Epoch to be, but what motivates you, why you spend these hours making this thing, what it is that you think the genre is lacking and where you vision this mod to be. Because I think if I learn something about that, I learn something about what's going on "behind the scenes", like I've gotten tidbits of info from streams about AWOL and his brother going through great lengths discussing the mod, I've heard AXLE talk about "this isn't about the money for us", and Sequisha clearly has some sort of vision with the hooded/cloaky guys, the cemetery of the first front page, and the "hype videos" we saw before we were even able to try this mod for ARMA3 (for those who cannot recall, it was some dude stopping his car and walking toward a church where a cultist would slowly walk toward him, with lit up smoke, lighting and doom metal playing in the background).

I believe I'm not alone in my curiosity about this, so that is why I made this a forum post instead of a private message to the developers, because I also believe that in answering this central question, we also will have a couple of puzzle pieces fall into place about a bunch of things, and it will help motivate some in their eager awaiting for the big test of 0.3.0 :)  WHYYYYYY... WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?! :D

Also, thanks for having the stamina to pay attention throughout this small wall of text, yo.

If you had used the forum search function, you would have been able to find the thread linked below, and the sixth post down gives you the solution - I am merely going by the old decree "Give a man a fish, feed him for a day, teach a man how to fish, feed him for a lifetime" - essentially with the search function you can find solutions to your problems earlier.

People complain about carebear-servers, and I agree.

The thing is, two years ago I was pretty dogmatic at running first-person, hardcore loot tables, no help for those who got their codes hacked/replaced, grindy, leathal settings, few vehicles only on our A2E-epoch server, and while we managed for some time to keep a population of 25-30 players, everyone was complaining to the point where they simply left to other servers. We had requests for self-bloodbags, more sniper rifles, easier ways to find cinder/mortar, more vehicles, because that's what the players wanted.

So I struggled for a long time with trying to tweak everything, even made a system that punished late-night lockpicking and all that jazz, but with the progressive changes toward making things easier, players left anyhow, now because the settings were changing too often.

Bottom line though, the servers that are populated do what the majority of players want: ie. lots of ways to find guns, indestructible bases, craftable vehicles, etc. etc. - I see some random people insist on "hardcore servers being needed" but these guys make more noise than action.

They probably should have kept it to themselves for much longer imo. - because the majority seems to be unaware that this alpha mod is extremely unfinished. You found some redundant callextensions and code that negates itself, well that IS a part of testing and fixing shit (ie. alpha) optimizing code is a process.

Like they themselves keep saying over, and over, and over... once there's a working foundation of the mod, once it has matured enough, these extra "checks and balances" will be removed. During the testing phase they want to keep things in lockdown. Obviously people are getting around that, obviously people are doing what they want with the mod anyways, and I do understand why, because they want this mod to have more features and functions and stuff so it is more like what currently is in vanilla.

Well guess what, that's the very same goal that the devs have, but they want to have a stable platform on which to build those additional functions. They want to fix all the issues with the core of the mod BEFORE they add a bunch of stuff on top of it. And they want feedback and reports on that very core, because of feedback received about something that breaks because of something added on a custom server is completely useless to them.

Again, I think they should've just kept it under wraps until such a time where the foundation was more complete, and the code was more proofread, etc. - this would've kept so much drama at bay. But like the saying goes: once the cat is out of the bag...

You can ask RonHillUltra for them (for example).
The map in its current state is far too unfinished/broken to reliably host.
There is a new release coming on monday that hopefully fixes them.

We have completed three trader cities and have it running on a test server and will test it with Epoch with AWOL's assistance. As soon as it is in workable shape it will be shared.

Tobias Solem got a reaction from Darth_Rogue in AI missions/script comparison
There are many different AI-missions and scripts here, and trying to wade through them all to get a comparison can be kind of tough. That's what this thread is for, give your impression and your opinions on one versus the other (strength vs. weaknesses). I will be using this template for my comparisons, feel free to use it or your own:

    Name of script:
    Creator:
    HC support:
    Type of script:
    Configurability:
    In development:
    Bugs:
    Your opinion:
    Compared to similar mods:

    1.

Name of script:  VEMF (Vampire's Epoch Mission Framework)
    Creator: Vampire
    HC support: No
Type of script: Multiple town invasion(s) with box reward
    Configurability: Not a lot.
In development: No, development has ceased.
Bugs: Sometimes loot crates spawn on top of roofs, other than that, none to speak of.
Your opinion:  It's a good town-invasion script, but the AI don't take cover so players soon will easily farm these missions. AI The loot crate can spawn on roofs sometimes.
Compared to similar mods: There aren't really any other missions exactly like VEMF, A3EAI has roaming town AI, but does not come with loot crates, A3EAI is more advanced and the AI uses teamwork much better, doesn't stand in the open as much, etc. My personal opinion is that other AI-scripts have come past it by now.

    2.

Name of script:  SEM (Simple Epoch Missions)
    Creator: Kiloswiss
    HC support: No
Type of script: Mission system divided into two categories: Static and Dynamic (think crashes and convoys)
Configurability: Easy to configure, not that many settings
In development: Development has halted indefinitely
Bugs: Some missions do not finish (AI wander off), mission descriptions can be a bit wonky (blablablablabla).
Your opinion: This is your classic mission system, aside for some
Compared to similar mods: FuMS has SEM integrated into it, but FuMS runs on HC, which is an improvement in my opinion

    3.

Name of script: A3EAI (Arma 3 Epoch AI)
    Creator: Face
HC support: Yes, but you can run it on local server without HC also.
Type of script: Roaming infantry, roaming vehicles, town AI, Static AI
Configurability: Lots and lots of options for you to configure and customize, from loot to skill levels, etc. - in some way A3EAI can emulate players, in some ways it's the best PvE-AI for an empty server. Face designed it to be somewhat of a single player experience.
In development: Yes. Face is expanding on it in his spare time.
Bugs: None to speak of. It is a very solid script.
Your opinion: We run a rather slow server (population wise) and this makes the server feel more alive. Sometimes players mistake the AI for other players.
Compared to similar mods: Somewhat similar to a part of VEMF, but much better.

    4.

Name of script: FuMS (Fulcrum Mission System)
    Creator: horbin
    HC support: Yes
Type of script: Full mission system with tons and tons of different type of missions, town invasions, etc.
Configurability: Like A3EAI this comes with a TON of configurable settings.
In development: Yes, horbin updates it every once in awhile.
Bugs: Plenty, missions won't end (SEM), start, and it's a bit wonky, configuring each "theme" can be hairy, there are lots of things you can mess up.
Your opinion: Generally this is THE most powerful mission system out there currently given that it integrates several other mission systems.
Compared to similar mods: SEM, VEMF, better than both.
