Advice for PVP

So my group and I we're all relatively new to ARMA 3 Epoch. We have various experience in FPS games but nothing quite like this.

We frequently find ourselves getting wiped by 1 or two guys while we're exploring or approaching Ai Missions.

What I am looking for are some tips/advice on how to combat this issue because right now we're all getting tired of gearing up to go on a Ai Mission, getting within 1km and getting shot by another player before we even have a chance to setup positions/scout the area.

Last night we had 4 of us in a white SUV driving around towards a container, we got within 1km and parked, ran down, found it had already been looted so ran back to the car, started driving back towards a different mission and from somewhere in the hills a lynx with what I can only assume was armour piercing rounds takes 3 shots and kills all 4 of us (2 instantly, 2 with car explosion).

This happens to us all the time, we can't seem to do any missions because we almost always die before we get the chance, this leaves us with no option but to hoard and do loot runs... We can't find explosives to raid bases, we are forever getting raided ourselves.. What are we doing wrong? Can anybody give us tips, tricks, or lead us to some videos of players doing Ai Missions?

Are we too impatient? Are we just unlucky? Are we not being careful enough (if so how can we improve).

I love ARMA 3 Epoch, Love base building but the PVP just seems so hard. We very very rarely spot other players before they kill us...

TLDR; Need advice on PVP and spotting players while looting or doing Ai Missions. We never find other players before they find us.

On average how long do the better players camp a spot/hill/town or area to find other players that they may have heard in the distance? I find if I hear something near by I will head in that direction and camp/observe the town or area for about 3-5 minutes before I move on

I WANT to do PVP, and prefer to play PVP I just want to get better at it lol

I've played some King of The Hill but i guess not enough of it. I will get stuck into it again. I wonder if playing KoTH will make me less patient though knowing I can just get back into battle super easily, will it get me into the habit of making wreckless decisions?

When I started playing Arma / DayZ mod I went with a group of guys and one of them had an uncanny sense to spot other players (no cheats).  Me on the other hand scopes out an area for 10 minutes then runs in and get shot by someone standing out in the open.  My advice... find a guy like I had and run with him.  He had the spotting skills and I had the shooting ones!

I find there two kind of FPS.

1. Why didnt he die i swear i shot him first..

2. WTF Where the hell did I get killed from??

In my experience Arma 3 is number 2, generally you get killed without even knowing there was someone there.

My suggestion is park way out, setup people in covering positions and send in a sacrificial lamb to reveal enemy positions lol

1 in no way is 1km far enough coming in with a vehicle especially if another player is camping the area. ( I've parked 2km out and ran in myself )

2 don't lie down in bushes thinking you're hidden as a lot of players have potatoes for pc's and although you believe you're in deep grass they see you clear as day ( hide behind trees, rocks, ect when scanning areas )

3 if you have a team of 4 then all take a quadrant ( IE North, South, East, West ) and when you're done a mission don't all go down to loot Id have just one person loot while the other three continue scanning the area.

4 just takes a lot of practice.

Never slow down in a vehicle or sit stationary.

Never bunch up and keep good spacing so that if you do get droped, the other members in your group can grab the assailiant, or have a better chance of spotting him from a different position.

Never go to missions and run in. Always wait on the other guy getting more impatient than you. Once hes at the box, drop him.

Good communication and not 8 guys screaming down TS is vital.

Have your stronger players do specific roles, ie your best shot sniping, your spotter covering him, close quarter guys and so forth.

If running and your heads stuck in the direction you're running then you're doing it wrong, you should ALWAYS be moving your head around checking positions.

FOV change to  whatever you want, You'll see from the sides.

Spend hours upon hours playing.

The more likley reason that others have loads of satchels lying around is because they dupe them ;) They say they will fix it this next patch, but i doubt it.

He who spots the other person first will usually have a massive advantage. Unless you're really terrible. Sometimes its better to watch a guy and follow then kill than sperg out and scream guy guy shoot in a panick and miss, it lets him know you're about.

Don't draw attention to yourself.

All standard shit.

As mentioned KOTH.. Best place for CQB but also a good place to practice long shots and situational awareness.

Edit: Of course you can't play KOTH style in Epoch but the quick action KOTH gives is the training needed to be able to stand your ground good in other mods for ARMA 3. It will take you some time to find a balance.

maintain a spread between players of at least 20m on maps like altis push it out to 50m .

always assume your about to be shot and act accordingly.

observe everything always be looking around.

in any vehicle constantly change heading speed and in helicopters altitude , even if your driving along a road you should be "waddling".

as for dying between missions think about it from the killers prescriptive there was a high chance of people traving between the 2 missions so he set up to ambush the most likely route . dont take the easiest route .

best advice I could give out is lots of shooting practice on KOTH , when approaching missions always assume there is someone in the area and act accordingly , make yourself invisible (bushes , rocks , defilade) always try to shoot from the smallest stance possible (better shooting and smaller target). if you take fire don't stand around , keep on the move till you lose him and swing around a flank or bug out the area.

never crown the top of a hill , this lets everyone and their grandmother know where you are as you are a sillouhette on a sky background.

if you can wait for the perfect shot , depending on what gun you use and how far the target is you may only get 1 - 2 shots so firing too early can ruin a perfectly good ambush.

have your head on a swivel 100% of the time , you never really know when the area is clear or when more people are moving in flanks or behind you.

generally in arma the guy who spots first will come out on top but the better shooter and mover will usually win out on epoch (due to more health and lower damage).

Never underestimate a good hip fire with an LMG , switching to iron sights or scope loses you a valuable split second where you could light him up with some accurate hip fire and take him down before he gets a shot off.

really its all about practice , shooting , movements and teamwork ... gradudally with time you'll all know how each other play and whats your strengths and weaknesses.

Alright, forget what everyone else just mentioned. Here is what you do. Turn off ALL your mods, and start up Arma with your squad. Go to Multiplayer, go to Filter, and in the bar, type in "Ws.Arma", press enter and wait for servers to show up. Pick a full server that's hosted closest to you. US, UK, AU, RU, what ever. Play. Join independent, and create a group, and invite your buddies. Ok, now you play this game, until you guys get good at the following techniques.

Communication - When you are attacking, or being attacked by an enemy, learn to spot out correctly where he is in relation to you, and your team mates. To do this, your team mates also must keep tabs on where you are as well. Use the compass. Holding K brings that up, and you can give at least respectable directions using this, and a map if your a bit more skilled.

Flanking - This is important, because this is probably why you and your team got whiped out by one guy. I've played Epoch before i stopped playing it and i was able to do two things using flanking. Firstly, i killed an entire squad of 5 with an LMG. Second, on a nicer day, i got attack by  squad of 3 when they blew up my truck and my hurt me pretty good. I flanked around two mountains before i came back, got the drop on all three, and forced them to drop their weapons, an give me food and water and even a quadbike to survive after i lost all my gear. Flanking is important, and can change the tide of battle.

Common Sense - If one of your team mates is like on of mine, don't listen to him. If someone says "screw it, lets just YOLO into the middle of the field", shoot him. Lol, no one needs a team mate that makes suicidal decisions. Ok, i doubt you have a squad mate like that, but basically, don't do things that would result in you getting shot, or over powered to begin with. Plan your approach to a mission, make sure you pick a nice spot where there is cover in case you end up in a firefight, which in most cases, will happen no matter what mission your heading to. It's PVP, and everyone is looking for a fight.

Preparation - EXPECT THE UN-EXPECTED! There was once a time i had i moment when i said the words, "An suddenly, Tank", and it happened. Ok, well, that's not likely in Epoch, but an MRAP is just as Armored enough to ruin your day. With a driver that isn't risking it, he could have you and your entire team as road kill in seconds, so make sure you have someone with something that can go up against heavy vehicles, such as a Zafir, or a .50 Cal sniper rifle. Though, a Zafir is your best bet, as the amount of hurt you can dish out, is un-matched. (for now... just for now...)

Down Time - After a long day of work, it's great to wind down with some base building, funny jokes, and chopping down trees for hours. It's a good idea to set up a base in a location where your not going to expect a lot of visitors, as in a PVP game, that's what some do for their time being. Base Hunters HAVE NO MERCY, so try to keep your base in a condition where it's defend-able, and not accessible by the air. Also, don't store your best gear at base. Put a storage piece in the middle of nowhere, so you can go grab that, and take it to base, this way if your base is raided, you won't lose everything.

That is all! After this training, you should be good to go up against some of the best PVP players! Also, there's one more trick i forgot to mention. Fight or Flight. Know when to take on an opponent and when to run for your life. That, can't be practiced, and is more of an instinctive thing, depending on situation apparatus. Good Luck, Good Gaming.

Lots of great tips. I'm REALLY new to Arma3 too. I always tend to die because I don't think I'm patient enough. I think when I can find the enemy, I do ok. I have a hard time spotting enemy too. Lately, I've been doing a lot of free looking while running (or crouched moving at faster pace than walk, only running to get to more cover). I've also taken to stopping & recon'ing the area for a min before moving to the next cover.

Last night, that paid off because a guy that normally kills me was sitting in an unusual spot & while I was looking around, noticed him up on top of an antenna laying prone. From my angle, he looked like a dead body & since I'm still learning the game, had to lay prone to see if what he looked like looked like I did laying prone. When I noticed it was the same, I shot . . . & got the kill. I had to be in his blind spot though too. I was probably right at the edge of his visibility behind him, but of course 50-60m behind/below him.

Patience is key & that is what I'm learning. Move too fast, give your position away. In CS, it was movement that keyed you into a player. In Arma, there's a lot more moving (trees/bushes responding to wind, scope swing, etc), so finding the player moving in all that is important to get the drop.

Yeah patience is most often key but never underestimate the positives of having a suicidal guy in the group either. Having only group mates that plays it safe will doom you in many conditions to and never open up for some glorious wins that normaly would lead to loses.

Edit: Think it's all about finding your playstyle and learning to play with you group.

TRUTH. XD

We all have that one suicidal guy in the group.

When you reach key areas (such as mission sites, or such) never drive all the way up to where it is. Stop somewhere in cover and if you are in a group, spread out and have a look around before actually approaching the site. Ask yourselves questions like: "Where would I be if I was a lone sniper?", or "Where can we approach with the most cover?".

ARMA3 in general punishes you for carelessness more than anything. Carelessly driving straight into a mission, or carelessly running in open terrain, or similar is what tends to kill you.
