Update: 01/09/2014

Here are the server bikeys for both currently available versions of Origins on DayZ Launcher.

1.7.8.5 | 1.7.9

Place into your server's \keys\ directory and voila, verifySignatures = 2 works again!

--------------------------

As many of you server owners will have noticed, there are a LOT of Epoch/Overwatch/Origins mashup servers being set up at the moment.

Personally, I feel this is a good thing because it gives our playerbase even more choice and diversity with regard to their DayZ experience. However, there is a downside - and a big one at that.

Currently, the ONLY way of getting an Overpoochins server up and running is by disabling signature verification. This is RIDICULOUSLY dangerous, especially considering how most anti-hack solutions aren't designed to plug the holes in Origins. One could easily exploit one of their PBOs and cause all sorts of havoc.

With that said, I don't think the Overpoochigenies thing is going away, and I also don't see the Origins developers releasing a server bikey any time soon. Taking all of this into consideration, I think it might be in the best interest of everyone involved if the DayZ (and primarily the Epoch - since all the mashup servers are running on Epoch) community were to re-sign the PBOs and distribute these additional keys to our playerbase, along with a matching bikey for server owners.

The total size of this package would be less than a kilobyte, and yet would serve the purpose of securing our servers from the inevitable slew of exploits that are almost CERTAINLY coming.

Hence this topic. I think such an action should ONLY be taken if we can get the entire community behind it; if anyone has any objections or concerns please feel free to post them here. Who knows, I might be the only one interested in such a move :)

IIRC, you don't have the right to re-sign an addon.

And tbh with you, I'd rather not go it, you maybe knew what happend with OpenDayZ when they ported Taviana? The creators ALMOST (notice, almost?) stopped OpenDayZ because of them porting over the work of someone else without asking.

If I were you I'd stop right here.

Origins creators are pretty egocentric, they don't share server files, NOTHING, so don't try to beat them because it's THEIR work and you risk getting the law behind you.

I like the idea, I'd do it for i.e Overwatch or another mod, but not origins, because of the creators of it..

Legally speaking there's nothing in their licence about re-signing their PBOs (most mods are pretty explicit about it, but their latest licence says NOTHING about it whatsoever). I'm aware of their reputation, and without turning this into an everyone-vs-Origins debate (those have been done to death over on ODZ :P ), they're not exactly in Bohemia Interactive's good books themselves at the moment; they're currently in breach of a cease-and-desist order given back in June/July. So if THAT'S the concern people have, I'd say they didn't have a leg to stand on.

But anyway, the primary motivation behind doing this - IF we do it - must be to protect the playerbase. People are going to keep making @DayZ_Epoch;@Origins servers, but the players on those servers are unprotected right now. This isn't a good thing for ANYONE, and if it's a choice between the lesser of two evils...

Personally I think this is a great idea from a server security standpoint. However like xBowBii I also know too damn well KingCunt will be like in his name an absolute C*nt about this and will not be worth our time / effort unfortunately. NOT unless you wanna part with a few hundred thousand dollars to throw at the C*nt and take the rights from him personally.

From what I've heard, Kinghunt and the rest of the previous community team now have no association or stake in Origins whatsoever, hence the split from GamersPlatoon.

I could be wrong, but as far as I know the current Origins project - as it stands - is the result of a single member (AlexSpain) of the old development team spinning the project off on his own and aligning with LagFreeServers (possibly his own venture) for funding.

Either way, we're COMPLETELY covered by the Bohemia Interactive DML license, which is what Origins is refusing to adhere to by not releasing server files. Personally, I couldn't care less about ANY of the Origins content aside from the map itself. Just for reference, these are the relevant sections of the DML, which Bohemia has stated applies to ALL DayZ derived projects.

Section 2, paragraph five, subsection b:

No downstream restrictions. You may not offer or impose any additional or different terms or conditions on, or apply any Effective Technological Measures to, the Licensed Material if doing so restricts exercise of the Licensed Rights by any recipient of the Licensed Material.

The full text can be found here: http://www.bistudio.com/community/licenses/dayz-mod-license-share-alike

There are also various references to non-commercial use only; the debate about whether or not Origins is commercialising DayZ has been done to death on every forum out there, so lets just leave that to one side for the time being.

Either way, Bohemia Interactive are CRYSTAL CLEAR in their statement that as recipients of a DayZ-derived project, we are entitled to all rights granted to the Origins developers themselves, including the right to re-package and redistribute the mod as we see fit. Now, I'm not suggest anything as severe as that; instead, I'm suggesting we restore core Bohemia Interactive functionality which has been denied to the community by the Origins team's refusal to provide a BIKEY for community use.

We have several DayZ distribution platforms available to us in the form of DayZ Commander, DayZ Launcher, and PlayWithSix Updater; these platforms could be easily leveraged to distribute this small addon - an addon of our own creation, I should point out, as it doesn't modify the Origins code in the slightest - to end users if and when they're connecting to servers using the @Origins map alongside Epoch or other mods.

Please note, this will NOT unlock Origins-specific features such as blueprint building, their storyline, or their trade system; the only thing we have access to is the assets provided with the mod, including the updated Taviana map. Given that core functionality is still not accessible to us, I would even go as far as to argue that this falls within the terms of "fair use"; yet another legal stick to waggle at them should they be silly enough to start complaining. It's also worth noting that no legal action has been taken to date by Origins towards anyone running Origins-derived servers; from the Miniserver stuff over at OpenDayZ, to the dozens of mashed up Epoch/Origins servers currently running today.

On a lighter note, I've re-signed the PBOs myself and tested it out on one of my servers as a quick test; works flawlessly :) verifySignatures = 2; on and no problems whatsoever. The setup also includes @Overwatch with the (publicly available) bikey.

It's just the map tbh.

It's more optimized than Taviana 2.0 and the extra landmasses are nice :)

Hell, I'd even support re-packaging @tavi and @taviana together (oil rigs too) into an "Origins Lite" or "Taviana 3.5" mod.

Martin is also still part of Origins, and I'm guessing Vilas as well due to the amount of his models contained within the mod and the ongoing content updates, it's on version 1.7.9 now.  I do wonder if they will stick to thier promise of releasing everything at version 2.0.0 or milk the versioning up to that point.

Regarding LFS:

All the LFS thing gets around is the negative publicity, the GTX hosting thing and people paying a premium for Origins.

Thus it appears as if they aren't charging for the mod but for a server supporting the mod, when in actual fact thier Origins vz DayZ Mod's prices are different, with Origins carrying a €9 premium over any other DayZ Mod they support.

So they're still charging a premium for thier mod, but due to them starting thier own GSP the whole charging for content is hidden within the cost of a server, of which you still get zero access to any of the files/content.

The charging for DayZ Mod content and licencing issues appears hidden this way.

Regarding the Bikey Issue:

If your wanting a valid bikey that much, have you made an enquiry to the Origins people for one?

You never know, and I have my doubts on this, but they may give you one provided you approach them from a server security angle.

And if they don't, well you already know how much respect the Origins Mod people have for the DayZ community. :)

Edit: I have done some digging and all of thier domain information (LFS + OriginsMod Domains etc) have the owner information hidden behind Identity Protection services. So there is no official way to link LFS with OriginsMod.

This entire thing may now be a non-issue; thanks to someone who wants to remain anonymous, I've obtained an Origins bikey and a method for generating new ones. Tested working with 1.7.8.5 and 1.7.9.

If everyone's happy with me releasing this, I'll post it up here later today.

And thanks everyone for your support on this subject so far; 10 yes votes and a 100% agreement! :)

Let me stop you right there... you obviously haven't followed the Origins controversies but A LOT of the origins code isn't their work, it's the work off the backbone of others.  Gamers platoon stole a good portion of work.... You can find the mods models/code or a form of the mods models/code from across the internet, that other people made, not Gamers platoon.

  • 4 weeks later...

Stupid question time, I never got around to using this and my server got hacked, looks like they hijacked the admin tools available on the epoch forum. I presume all I have to do it place the keys with other server keys and have my playerbase place the key in their arma 2 OA directories?

TIA
